Loudoun County Fire-Rescue Chief Joseph Pozzo stated that four of the six members of the fire-rescue system who were injured this afternoon at the scene of a two-alarm fire on Meadowood Court in Leesburg, remain in the hospital.
Chief Pozzo went on to say, "I ask that each of you keep our brothers and sisters in your thoughts and prayers during this time. Updates will also be provided via the Tandberg System Monday, May 26 @ 9:00 AM. It is imperative that each of you stay focused on your own safety, too. The following is a summary of what happened.
Around 1:00 PM, Sunday, May 25, 2008, Loudoun County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management received a 9-1-1 call for a structure fire in the 43000 Block of Meadowood Court in Leesburg.
Fire and rescue personnel arrived on the scene to find heavy fire coming from the attic of the two-story single-family home and the fire was quickly spreading. Firefighters went to work to quickly contain the fire. However, conditions began deteriorating rapidly, forcing the crews to abandon their efforts inside the home and a MAYDAY was issued. While escaping from the fire, four firefighters, two assigned to Tower 606 and two assigned to Reserve Engine 6, were injured.
Initially, two firefighters were flown to the Washington Hospital Center, Burn Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the fire, while the two other firefighters were transported by ground to Lansdowne Hospital Center. Due to the nature and extent of the injuries to one of the firefighters, they too were later transported by ground from Lansdowne to the Washington Hospital Center, Burn Center. The three firefighters are in serious, but stable condition at this time.
The fourth injured firefighter is being treated at Lansdowne and will be kept overnight for further observation. A fifth firefighter injured at the scene, was treated at Lansdowne and has been released. A sixth firefighter was treated at the scene but was not transported.
The Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating this fire. Due to the extent of this fire and the large number of injuries, fire and rescue personnel will be maintaining a presence in the neighborhood for the next 12-24 hours.
